During Blackpoint Cyber’s pre-day panel, the discussion moved quickly past surface-level threat analysis and into consequences.

The panel addressed the widening gap between perceived security and insurable security, a gap many organizations only discover after an incident.

Andy Runyan, Director of Strategic Alliances at UKON, framed the issue plainly.

“Response maturity directly impacts outcomes. When MDR is deployed effectively, downtime can drop from weeks to days: a difference that can turn a multi-million-dollar claim into a far smaller financial event.”

That observation landed because it reflected what insurers are already measuring. Claims data shows Business Email Compromise and ransomware now appearing with similar frequency. Invoice manipulation continues to be one of the most common and damaging loss scenarios tied to MSP-managed environments. For every ransomware incident, there are multiple BEC claims moving quietly through insurance, often with less visibility but equal disruption.

The takeaway for MSPs was not that prevention no longer matters. It was that readiness has become inseparable from financial impact. Documentation, response planning, and operational discipline increasingly determine how incidents are evaluated long after the technical work is done.

Across sessions, the same reality emerged. Modern attacks are less about breaking in and more about logging in. Identity compromise, cloud misconfigurations, and abuse of legitimate tools dominate incident response. A clean dashboard can coexist with deep exposure.

This matters because neither insurers nor attorneys evaluate incidents based on how advanced an attacker was. They evaluate whether controls were appropriate, whether expectations were clear, and whether response aligned with what was represented before the incident.

Many MSPs understand this instinctively but lack support in navigating it.

“MSPs all over the country are struggling to find resources and education about their own risk,” Runyan said. “That’s why it’s so important a partner like Blackpoint Cyber not only identified the concerns owners have about their own liability and their customer needs, but provided the time and space to address it.”

With Christmas just days away, most MSPs are doing what everyone else is doing right now. Wrapping up loose ends. Pushing anything non-urgent into January. Telling themselves there will be time later to deal with the things that haven’t caused trouble yet.

That’s usually when the contract drifts furthest from the center of the business. It’s signed, filed away, and trusted to keep doing its job while attention moves elsewhere. No one rereads it during the holidays. No one opens it because things feel calm.

Meanwhile, the business keeps changing. New services are added. Tooling evolves. Client expectations stretch. The agreement stays exactly as it was, less because it’s airtight than because it’s familiar.

That quiet misalignment sits beneath the surface of the latest UKON Hotcakes Holiday Edition.

Eric Tilds, an MSP-focused attorney and former MSP owner, has seen this moment often enough to recognize it.

“People think because they’ve never had a problem before, that nothing bad will ever happen,” he says. “And that drives me absolutely crazy.”

Tilds’ credibility comes from proximity. He spent more than a decade running a managed services firm before moving into law, and today his practice is built almost entirely around MSPs. The pattern he describes is not reckless behavior or willful neglect. It is continuity. Contracts written for a different era remain in place while the business quietly becomes something else.

What changes first is rarely technical. It is linguistic.

In Tilds’ work, disputes are often decided not by what an MSP intended to provide, but by how that intent was recorded.

“Words are important,” Tilds explains. “You’d be surprised how important commas are and semicolons and all the punctuation matters.”

Under pressure, language hardens. Vague phrasing invites interpretation. Interpretation rarely favors the party who wrote it years earlier.

The managed services model itself has contributed to the problem. As MSPs shifted from fixing issues to preventing them, the way services were sold began to carry a different weight.

“As soon as it becomes proactive, the risk profile is just blown out of the water,” Tilds explains.

Prevention implies assurance. Assurance creates expectation. When scope, cadence, and dependencies are left undefined, clients fill in the gaps themselves.

That dynamic surfaced starkly in litigation Tilds references during the episode. A business owner was asked why the company never carried cyber insurance. The answer was simple. They believed their provider had absorbed that responsibility. “We had land,” the client said, as though assets or vendors functioned as coverage.

For Tilds, the statement was not naïve. It was predictable.

This is why he encourages MSPs to require clients to carry cyber liability insurance as a matter of contract.

The purpose is not enforcement or oversight. It forces a conversation that clarifies roles and reveals whether a client understands risk as shared or expects it to be transferred entirely.

Just as important is knowing where MSP involvement should stop.

Tilds is direct about the danger of crossing professional boundaries. “If you start reading into their insurance policy,” he warns, “now you’re kind of acting as their broker.”

That step, often taken with good intentions, can quietly expand responsibility in ways MSPs do not anticipate. Any assistance beyond technical input needs to be deliberate, scoped, and written.

One of the episode’s sharper insights runs counter to instinct.

Many MSPs believe that broad descriptions offer flexibility and protection. Tilds disagrees. “When you’re vague, it’s not that you’re not on the hook for anything,” he says. “It’s that you’re on the hook for everything.”

A statement like “we manage patching” expands endlessly unless it is anchored to timing, conditions, and exclusions. Precision, not generality, is what limits exposure.

There is nothing dramatic about these lessons, which may be why they are so often postponed. Contracts age quietly. Businesses grow unevenly. Risk accumulates without spectacle. Christmas week, with its natural lull, makes those dynamics easier to ignore. January, Tilds notes, is often when they reappear in the form of pointed questions.

The episode does not argue that MSPs are failing or that catastrophe is imminent. It offers something more practical and more durable: a reminder that the most consequential document in a managed services business is rarely the one getting attention when things are going well, and that clarity delayed tends to arrive on someone else’s terms.

Nothing is burning. No alarms are ringing. The decision arrives folded into a renewal calendar, one more item between payroll and planning. A quote lands in the inbox. The application is tolerable. Coverage is bound. Life goes on.

That quiet does not last.

Cyber insurance shows its character later, when the paperwork turns physical and begins to govern what people can and cannot do. By then, the path is already set. The ending has momentum. It was written months earlier, sentence by sentence, when no one felt the need to linger.

The difference between recovery and regret never shows up in the price. It lives in the language.

A market optimized for motion

The cyber insurance market moves quickly now. Submissions skim the surface. Turnaround times have tightened. Pricing stays competitive. The process rewards decisiveness and discourages delay.

Speed has its costs.

As underwriting accelerates, the work does not disappear. It relocates. Definitions sharpen. Conditions narrow. Requirements harden into quiet obligations. The buying experience feels smooth while the policy itself grows increasingly exact.

Most buyers do not pause long enough to notice. They assume alignment between what they meant to buy and what they will receive. They trust that intent will matter later.

It rarely does.

The real examination arrives under pressure, when choices must be made fast, information is incomplete, and every decision carries weight. By then, the policy has stopped being theoretical.

When responsibility becomes assumed

The same compression has taken hold in managed services.

Over the past decade, MSPs have moved from fixing what breaks to preventing what might. Security, monitoring, risk management. The work has expanded. So have expectations.

For a former MSP owner who today runs an MSP-focused law office, Eric Tilds has watched this shift from the legal side. The disputes he encounters today are seldom about broken tools. They are about misunderstood responsibility.

“Every little nitty-gritty thing that MSPs do today is under scrutiny,” he said in a recent episode of UKON’s Hotcakes.

Clients hear certainty where providers intend effort. Broad promises, aging contracts, and inherited language create space for interpretation. When something goes wrong, that space fills fast.

Tilds often talks about the Managed Services Agreement as a fence. A well-built one marks the boundary and keeps the peace. A weak one invites conflict.

The most dangerous cases, he notes, rarely involve misconduct. They begin with assumption. The quiet belief that hiring an MSP transfers cyber risk altogether.

That belief has surfaced again and again in litigation. In one case, a business owner was asked why the company never carried cyber insurance. The answer was plain. They thought their provider had them covered.

One assumption. Entirely different consequences.

The policies that fail most often are not always the cheapest. They are the ones that introduce doubt at the wrong moment and shift control away from the people trying to stabilize the business.

Public conversations about ransomware still linger on the demand. The figure in the note. The amount negotiated down.

Andy Runyan has seen where that focus falls short.

Drawing on U.S. Treasury data and stats from Cyber Rescue Alliance, Andy pointed out that many reported ransomware payments come in under $250,000. The real damage arrives elsewhere.

Downtime. Forensics. Legal response. Notification obligations. Reputational fallout. These costs accumulate quietly and relentlessly. What looks survivable in isolation can become overwhelming in combination.

Runyan also flagged a trend that surfaces only after the fact.

Coverage that erodes when controls fall short. Missing MFA. Inaccurate disclosures. Gaps between what was promised and what was actually in place.

Those details increasingly determine whether a claim is paid cleanly, reduced, or contested.

Cyber insurance has grown more precise. It expects honesty and alignment.

Why this moment matters

None of this suggests a market in decline. It describes a market maturing.

As claims data deepens and courts weigh intent against language, cyber insurance is shedding its broad assurances. What remains is enforceable precision.

Organizations that treat insurance as architecture, not ornamentation, fare better. They start with exposure, not limits. They measure controls instead of assuming them. They read policies when the stakes are low.

Understanding risk changes behavior. Translating it into financial terms changes decisions.

Cyber insurance is not decided when a quote is accepted. It is decided earlier, in the questions asked, the sentences read carefully, and the assumptions challenged while there is still time.

The companies that do this work rarely attract attention. They simply recover faster when others cannot.

That is the difference.

In last week’s HotCakes: Trick or Breach, Greg Bugbee, CISO of Novus Insight, joined UKON’s Andy Runyan and Will Brooks to talk about why confidence often replaces preparation when it comes to cyber risk.

Andy set the stage: “Ninety-five percent of people think they’re ready for a ransomware attack,” he said. “But only about a third have ever had their board participate in a tabletop.”

Scaling the Wall is where the myths about getting into cyber fall apart. Matt Lee’s path proves it. Finance. Mortgages. Gold. Diamonds. MSP leadership. And now, a voice in the room where the future of security is decided.

“Anybody can be an MSP. Any SMB will believe them if the pitch is good enough. But that doesn’t mean they get the same results.”

The Case for Resilience

Most MSPs talk prevention. Lee talks survival. He calls it thinking right of boom.

“Three out of five stages in NIST happen after the explosion. Detect. Respond. Recover. If you plan for that, you make your security stronger. You find out what really matters and you budget for it.”

It is not theory. It is a field manual for staying alive when the attack gets through.

The Economics of Failure

Small business budgets for all tech hover at seven percent of revenue. That money has to buy laptops, licenses, and security. It also has to fund the MSP who runs it.

“The client hands it over and says, ‘You’re the smart guy. Figure it out.’ Without shared responsibility, the basics slip. That’s when they get burned.”

The insurance market is changing that. Fines. Coverage minimums. Hard questions about controls. Lee says this is forcing action where advice alone has failed.

Why He Will Not Walk Away

Lee’s fire came from a year when his MSP was tied to multiple client breaches. The damage was personal.

“Once you have that kind of loss, you feel appointed to do this. I know I will not solve it in my lifetime. But it is my mission.”

It is also a challenge to anyone in the channel. To own the trust of a CEO, you must prove you can lead in the middle of the storm.
